In a method for determination of corrosion protection in a combustion engine coolant, both the coolant's refractive index and its conductivity are measured on a small quantity of coolant taken from the engine. The values thus obtained are used together to arrive at a measure of the corrosion protection of the coolant. Lightweight handheld instruments, namely a refractometer and a conductivity meter respectively, are used for the measurements. These instruments are simple and inexpensive and quickly provide measured values of sufficient accuracy for a quick answer as to whether the corrosion protection of the coolant does or does not meet specified requirements to be achievable by means of tables, diagrams or by simple formulae or by putting these into a computer.

Dans un procédé de détermination de la protection anticorrosion dans un liquide de refroidissement, à la fois l'indice de réfraction du liquide de refroidissement et sa conductivité sont mesurés sur une petite quantité dudit liquide prise dans le moteur. Les valeurs ainsi obtenues sont utilisées conjointement afin d'arriver à une mesure de la protection anticorrosion du liquide de refroidissement. Des instruments portatifs légers, notamment un réfractomètre et un conductimètre sont respectivement utilisés afin d'effectuer ces mesures. Ces instruments sont simples et peu coûteux et fournissent rapidement des valeurs mesurées d'une précision suffisante pour savoir si la protection anticorrosion du liquide de refroidissement correspond ou non aux besoins spécifiés pour pouvoir être réalisés au moyen de tableaux, diagrammes ou d'une simple formule, ou par placement de celles-ci dans un ordinateur.
