A system for partitioning SONET frames into logical channels in a SONET ring is described. A SONET frame comprising a number of STS frames is subdivided into a plurality of logical channels. Each logical channel includes one or more STS frames. A protection layer is assigned to each logical channel. The protection layer may correspond to protection provided by the SONET ring or protection provided by network elements and specific to the type of data traffic transmitted within each channel. If SONET level protection for a particular logical channel is disabled, the bandwidth for the STS frames comprising that channel may be allocated among two or more nodes in the SONET ring.

Cette invention concerne un système permettant de découper des trames SONET (Synchronous Optical Network/Réseau optique synchrone) en canaux logiques dans un anneau SONET. Une trame SONET comprenant un certain nombre de trames STS (Synchronous Transport Signal/Signal de transport synchrone) est subdivisée en une pluralité de canaux logiques. Chacun de ces canaux comprend une ou plusieurs trames STS. Une couche de protection est attribuée à chaque canal logique. Cette couche de protection peut correspondre à la protection assurée par l'anneau SONET ou par des éléments de réseau et correspond spécifiquement au type de trafic de données transmises au sein de chaque canal. Si une protection de niveau SONET pour un canal logique donné est inopérante, la largeur de bande pour les trames STS comprenant ce canal peut être répartie entre deux noeuds ou plus de l'anneau SONET.
