A wireless communication network which includes an antenna array (26) for receiving and transmitting signals to and from remote users which is capable of adapting to widely varying traffic levels. Different antenna elements (24) can be turned on during high user periods and off when there are fewer users. Also, beam width can be varied, with fewer antennas having wide beams in use when traffic levels are low and more antennas with narrow beams when traffic is high. Generally, the maximum capibility uses 180 antenna elements with beam widths of about 2° to cover a full 360°. This network can act as either a circuit switched network or a packet switched network, as desired.

La présente invention concerne un réseau de communication hertzienne qui comprend un ensemble d'antennes (26) destiné à recevoir et à émettre des signaux de et vers des utilisateurs se trouvant à distance, ledit réseau étant capable de s'adapter à des niveaux de trafic très différents. Différents éléments d'antenne (24) peuvent être mis en fonctionnement durant les périodes d'utilisation accrue et être mis hors fonctionnement lorsque le nombre d'utilisateurs est inférieur. La largeur de faisceau peut également varier, un nombre inférieur d'antennes à larges faisceaux étant utilisé lorsque les niveaux de trafic sont faibles, et un nombre supérieur d'antennes à faisceaux étroits étant utilisé lorsque le trafic est élevé. De manière générale, la capacité maximale correspond à l'utilisation de 180 éléments d'antenne à larges faisceaux d'environ 2° pour couvrir les 360° complets. Ce réseau peut, selon les besoins, fonctionner soit en tant que réseau à commutation de circuits, soit en tant que réseau à commutation de paquets.
