Abstract

A speech compression system capable of encoding a speech signal into a bitstream for subsequent decoding to generate synthesized speech is disclosed. The speech compression system optimizes the bandwidth consumed by the bitstream by balancing the desired average bit rate with the perceptual quality of the reconstructed speech. The speech compression system comprises a full-rate codec, a half-rate codec, a quarter-rate codec and an eighth-rate codec. The codecs are selectively activated based on a rate selection. In addition, the full and half-rate codec are selectively activated based on a type classification. Each codec is selectively activated to encode and decode the speech signals at different bit rates emphasizing different aspects of the speech signal to enhance overall quality of the synthesized speech. The overall quality of the system is strongly related to the excitation. In order to enhance the excitation, the system contains a fixed codebook comprising several subcodebooks. The invention reveals a way to apply a pitch enhancement efficiently and differently for different subcodebooks without using additional bits. The technique is particularly applicable to selectable mode vocoder (SMV) systems.

La présente invention concerne un système de compression de la parole capable de prendre un train binaire et par codage de produire un signal vocal devant être ensuite décodé en vue de la production d'un signal vocal synthétique. Pour optimiser la largeur de bande consommée par le train binaire, ce système de compression de la parole réalise un équilibre entre le débit binaire moyen attendu et la qualité de perception de la parole reconstituée. Le système de compression de la parole comprend un codeur-décodeur vitesse pleine, un codeur-décodeur ½ vitesse, un codeur-décodeur ¼ vitesse et un codeur-décodeur 1/8 vitesse. Ces codeurs-décodeurs sont activés sélectivement sur la base d'une sélection de vitesse. En outre, les codeurs-décodeurs 1/41 et ½ sont sélectivement activés sur la base d'une classification par types. L'activation sélective de chacun des codeurs-décodeurs tient compte de la nécessité de coder et décoder les signaux vocaux à différentes vitesses mettant en valeur différents aspects du signal vocal de façon à augmenter la qualité globale de la parole de synthèse. La qualité globale du système est fortement liée à l'excitation. Pour renforcer l'excitation, le système contient un dictionnaire figé comprenant plusieurs sous-dictionnaires. L'invention concerne enfin un procédé permettant de renforcer efficacement et de façon différenciée la hauteur tonale en fonction des différents sous-dictionnaires, sans utiliser de bits supplémentaires. Ce procédé convient particulièrement aux systèmes de vocodeurs à sélection de mode (SMV).
