Glassy coatings that isolate metal surfaces from carbon particles, and a method of applying the coatings. The coatings composed of essentially K2O, SiO2, and Al2O3, and has a CTE of at least 80 x 10-7/°C. These glassy coatings, which adhere well to metals, employ a potassium-silicate glass composition in three forms: a pure glass, a glass loaded with inert filler having a CTE higher than the glass itself, and a precursor frit that when 'reactive-cerammed' produces a predominantly leucite crystalline phase and forms the glassy coating in-situ on the metal surface, creating a protective layer between the exposed metal surface and corrosive chemical-processing environments.

La présente invention concerne des revêtements vitreux qui isolent des surfaces métalliques des particules de carbone, et un procédé d'application de ces revêtements. Ces revêtements sont composés essentiellement de K2O, SiO2, et de Al2O3, et ils possèdent un coefficient de dilatation thermique (CTE) d'au moins 80 x 10-7/ °C. Ces revêtements vitreux, qui adhèrent bien aux métaux, utilisent une composition de verre de silicate de potassium sous trois formes: un verre pur, un verre chargé avec une charge inerte possédant un CTE supérieur à celui du verre proprement dit, et un verre de scellement précurseur qui, lorsqu'il est «céramiqué réactif» produit une phase cristalline leucitique de façon prédominante et forme le revêtement de verre in-situ sur la surface métallique, créant une couche de protection entre la surface métallique exposée et les environnements de traitement chimique corrosif.
