What is claimed:
1. A method removing the distortion from an image created with a wide-angle lens having a three-dimensional shape, comprising the steps of:
a) creating a set of data points corresponding to the three-dimensional shape of the effective lens;
b) creating a digital copy of an image with the effective lens; and
c) mapping each pixel of the digital copy onto the data points.
2. The method of Claim 1, further comprising the step of dithering the bitmap prior to mapping it.
3. The method of Claim 1, further comprising the step of scaling and manipulating the image after creating it.
4. The method of Claim 1, further comprising the step of gathering position information from a viewer occurring after the step of mapping the image bitmap to the shape.
5. The method of Claim 4, further comprising the step of calling software routines to provide for changing views using orientation functions, in which the frame per second rate is between 0 and 60 frames per second occurring after the step of receiving position information.
6. The method of Claim 5, the step of mapping the image bitmap entails using a portion of the image bitmap.
7. The method of Claim 6, wherein virtually no degradation in the quality of an original image occurs.
8. The method of Claim 5, wherein the shape is generally
hemispheric.
9. The method of Claim 5, wherein the step of receiving position information involves polling a head mounted display's position sensors.
10. The method of Claim 9, wherein the position information includes roll, pitch and yaw data.
11. The method of Claim 1, wherein the shape is generally spherical.

12. The method of Claim 1, wherein the shape is generally toroidal shaped.
13. The method of Claim 1, wherein the image bitmap is from a broadcast cable image.
14. The method of Claim 1, wherein the image bitmap is from a DVD stored image.

15. The method of Claim 1, wherein the image bitmap is from live video.
16. The method of Claim 1, wherein the image bitmap is retrieved from memory.
17. The method of Claim 1, wherein the image bitmap is retrieved from a network based communication system.
18. The method of Claim 1, wherein the image bitmap is retrieved from satellite transmission.
19. The method of Claim 1, wherein the image bitmap is retrieved from the internet.
20. The method of Claim 1, wherein the image bitmap is retrieved through a cable system.
21. The method of Claim 1, wherein the image bitmap is retrieved from a video playback device.
22. A method for displaying a live video or still frame image, comprising the steps of:
a) capturing an image;
b) digitizing the captured image to form an image bitmap;
c) inputting lens parameters for the lens used in capturing the image; d) calling up a lens matching shape through the input lens parameters; e) loading the lens matching shape;
f) dithering the image;
g) mapping the dithered image bitmap to the lens matching shape;
h) updating viewing position information;
i) updating zoom information;
j) presenting a view corresponding to the zoom information and the viewing position information;
k) checking for a termination command;
1) if the termination command is yes, then stopping; and
m) if the termination command is no, going to step f).

23. The method of Claim 22, wherein the lens matching shape of step d) is created by the following steps:
calling up the nearest shape to the desired lens;
copying the shape and scaling the copied shape to a somewhat smaller size than the nearest shape;
subtracting the copied shape from the nearest shape to form a hollow shape;
manipulating the hollow shape to form a lens matching shape; and storing the lens matching shape in memory.
24. A steerable real time video display, comprising:
a steering mechanism; and
a viewing screen which shows a view of at least a portion of an image, wherein the method of Claim 1 is employed.
25. A steerable real time video display, comprising:
a steering mechanism; and
a viewing screen which shows a view of at least a portion of an image, wherein the method of Claim 22 is employed.
