Optical communication system apparatus (1360) and methods of operating an optical communications system (1100, 1200) are described, wherein a multiple laser source (1360) is utilized to provide channel synchronization signals for the system. The laser source utilizes a plurality of distributed feedback (DFB) lasers. The output of each DFB laser is phase modulated, and the phase modulated outputs are amplified, shaped and multiplexed together.

L'invention concerne un système (1360) de communication optique ainsi que des procédés d'exploitation d'un système (1100, 1200) de communication optique. Le système selon l'invention est caractérisé en ce qu'il utilise une source laser (1360) à longueurs d'onde multiples pour fournir audit système des signaux de synchronisation canal. Ladite source laser utilise une pluralité de lasers à contre-réaction distribuée (DFB). La sortie de chaque laser DFB est modulée en phase, et les sorties modulées en phase sont amplifiées, mises en forme et multiplexées.
