A method and apparatus that provides an accurate estimate of the time and amplitude of arrival of the first arriving overlapping multipath components (rays) in wireless location finding systems. Overlapping fading multipath components for mobile-positioning are resolved by exploiting the fact that multipath components fade independently. Although fast channel fading is usually considered a challenge to the location finding process, it is used as an additional tool to detect and resolve overlapping multipath rays. A projection technique (328) is also provided that exploits all possible a-priori channel information (338, 342, 346) into an adaptive filtering algorithm (314), thus providing needed robustness to divergence of the adaptive algorithm that might result from possible severe data matrix ill-conditioning and high noise levels, which are common in wireless location applications.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant d'établir une estimation précise du temps et de l'amplitude d'arrivée des composantes (ondes) de trajets multiples à recouvrement arrivant en premier dans des systèmes de localisation sans fil. Les composantes de trajets multiples à évanouissement et à recouvrement permettant le positionnement d'une unité mobile sont résolus par exploitation du fait que les composantes de trajets multiples s'évanouissent de manière indépendante. Bien que l'évanouissement rapide des canaux soit généralement considéré comme un défi pour le processus de localisation, il est utilisé comme un outil supplémentaire permettant de détecter et de résoudre des ondes de trajet multiples à recouvrement. L'invention concerne également une technique de projection consistant à exploiter toutes les informations à priori possibles concernant les canaux dans un algorithme de filtrage adaptatif, fournissant ainsi la solidité nécessaire à une divergence de l'algorithme adaptatif pouvant résulter d'un mauvais conditionnement possible grave des données matricielles et de niveaux de bruit élevés, chose courante dans des applications de localisation sans fil.
