Abstract:
(EN) A method and apparatus are disclosed for recommending television programming using decision trees. Inductive principles are utilized to identify a set of recommended programs that may be of interest to a particular viewer, based on past viewing behavior. A user's viewing history (130) is monitored and the shows that are actually watched by a user (positive examples) and the shows that are not watched by the user (negative examples) are analyzed. For each positive and negative program example (i.e., programs watched and not watched), a number of program attributes are classified in the user profile. The various attributes are then positioned in a hierarchical decision tree (200) based on a ranking of the entropy of each attribute. Each node and sub-node in the decision tree corresponds to a given attribute from the user profile. Each leaf node in the decision tree corresponds to either a positive or negative recommendation for a program mounted at the corresponding leaf node. The decision tree is (200) built using a decision tree process (300) that implements a 'top-down divide and conquer' approach. The decision tree can thereafter be applied to an electronic program guide (140) to make program recommendations.
(FR) L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de recommander une programmation télévisuelle sur la base d'arbres de décision. A cet effet, des principes inductifs sont utilisés pour identifier un ensemble de programmes recommandés pouvant présenter un intérêt pour un téléspectateur particulier, et ce au vu de son comportement télévisuel passé. Ainsi, l'appareil surveille l'historique (130) de visualisation d'un utilisateur et il analyse les émissions que l'utilisateur regarde effectivement (exemples positifs) ainsi que les émissions que l'utilisateur ne regarde pas (exemple négatifs). Pour chaque exemple de programme positif et négatif (à savoir, les émissions regardées ou non), un certain nombre d'attributs sont classés dans le profil de l'utilisateur. Ces divers attributs sont ensuite reportés dans un arbre (200) de décision hiérarchique sur la base d'un classement entropique de chaque attribut. Chaque noeud et chaque sous- noeud de l'arbre de décision correspond à un attribut donné du profil de l'utilisateur. Chaque noeud feuille de l'arbre de décision correspond soit à une recommandation positive soit à une recommandation négative relative à un programme monté au niveau du noeud feuille correspondant. L'arbre (200) de décision est établi au moyen d'un procédé (300) d'établissement d'arbres de décision mettant en oeuvre une approche de 'division et conquête descendante'. L'arbre de décision peut ensuite être appliqué à un guide (140) électronique des programmes pour faire des recommandations de programmes.
