Abstract:
A system and method multiplexes voice and data to transfer data both in uplink and downlink communications during silence periods in a voice call or other communication having periods of detected inactivity. Multiplexed information, such as dedicated and alternate traffic (204), may be transferred to and from a common mobile unit incorporating multiple applications or to a different mobile unit that is not involved in a voice call. This results in improved efficiency for the transmission resources and other resources of the system. The system and method employs a bandwidth allocation mechanism, such as alternate traffic insertion logic (222), that provides statistical multiplexing of voice and data, or other information, from the same traffic channel, such as a timeslot in a TDMA system, during periods of detected inactivity (208).
