Abstract:
(EN) A miniaturized gas sensor including film type electrodes, and a solid ionomer (5) electrolyte, for the detection of toxic gases, i.e., carbon monoxide, and other oxidizable or reducible gases and vapors is described. The all solid planar sensor cell has two or more film type electrodes arranged on a non conductive planar surface of a supportive material. The electrodes (3, 7, 8) are discrete and in intimate contact with the same solid polymer ionomer membrane. The sensor cell contains no liquid electrolyte and is operated in a potentiostatic or potentiodynamic mode. The unique feature of the sensor cell is that high sensitivity to a select gas or vapor is achieved by a novel three-phase contact area (2) design for a sensing electrode (3) which is easily accessible to the gas sample via small diffusion openings (6) or holes that penetrate through the solid polymer ionomer membrane layer above the sensing electrode. A significant signal to background noise enhancement is achieved for these film type sensor cells by processes that increase the three phase contact area.
(FR) La présente invention concerne un détecteur de gaz miniaturisé comprenant des électrodes de type film, et un électrolyte à base d'ionomère solide (5), et destiné à la détection de gaz toxiques tels que le monoxyde de carbone et d'autres gaz et vapeurs oxydables ou réductibles. Cette cellule de détection plane totalement solide comporte au moins deux électrodes de type film disposées sur une surface plane non électro-conductrice de matériau support. Les électrodes (3, 7, 8), qui sont discrètes, sont en contact étroit avec la membrane faite du même ionomère de polymère solide. La cellule de détection, qui ne contient pas d'électrolyte liquide, est capable de fonctionner en mode potentio-statique ou potentio-dynamique. La caractéristique essentielle de la cellule de détection et l'obtention d'une sensibilité élevée de sélection de gaz ou de vapeur grâce à un nouveau type d'électrode de détection (3) à zone de contact à trois phases (2) facilement accessible à l'échantillon de gaz via de petits orifices de diffusion (6)pénétrant la couche de membrane d'ionomère de polymère au-dessus de l'électrode de détection. Dans le cas de ces cellules de détection de type film, on a obtenu une bonne amélioration du rapport signal/bruit grâce à des traitements augmentant la superficie de la zone de contact à trois phases.
