A remotely programmable electromechanical display system which through the use of many sets of small translucent plastic flags (5) revealed vertically upwards, in the exact proportions required, from behind a white background (3), can emulate a very wide range of colour shades and thereby depict any image transmitted by electronic means to the location of the display. The flags, in sets of at least three different colours, are arranged so as to offer the possibility of 100 % flag coverage capability of the display and to avoid detrimental visual effects. Light passes through one or more flags and is reflected back through them. This, together with the white background, means that image programming is effected using standard 'inkjet' drivers. Actuating mechanisms are concealed behind the white background, as are the flags themselves when 'white' is required by the image.
