A method and system for combining plural independently addressable packets (P1-P4) into a SuperPacket (SP) to improve the utilization of a communications channel. The method and system reduce the percentage of the header information (H1-H4) that is redundant between packets (P1-P4) and/or redundant based on the source and destination addresses of the packets (P1-P4) as compared to the data payload (V1-V4). The combined SuperPackets (SPs) are disassembled at a terminating gateway (200B) or at a second multiplexer (230B). The reduction in header information (H1-H4) is especially useful in voice over IP communications systems where the data (V1-V4) is voice information that is kept in small packets (P1-P4) to avoid latency.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un système permettant de combiner en un superpaquet (SP) plusieurs paquets (P1-P4) adressables de manière indépendante, de façon à améliorer l'utilisation d'une voie de communication. Ce procédé et ce système réduisent le pourcentage des données d'en-tête (H1-H4) redondantes entre paquets (P1-P4) et/ou redondantes sur la base des adresses source et cible des paquets (P1-P4), si l'on compare à la charge utile des données (V1-V4). Les superpaquets (SP) combinés sont désassemblés au niveau d'une passerelle terminale (200B) ou d'un second multiplexeur (230B). La réduction des données d'en-tête (H1-H4) est particulièrement utile dans des systèmes de communication vocale sur Internet (VoIP), dans lesquels les données sont des informations vocales conservées en petits paquets pour éviter les temps d'attente.
