Method and apparatus for measuring viscous heating/heat build-up of viscoelastic materials, such as rubber and polymer compounds. Temperature changes in the viscoelastic material are measured during application of a shearing force to the viscoelastic material. The shearing force is applied by rotating a first (upper plate) die (25) relative to a second (lower plate) die (26), which remains stationary. Temperature changes in the viscoelastic material attributable to friction between the first die and an adjacent sealing ring (27) are accounted for, and subtracted out of the final temperature values. The present invention provides an accurate, quantifiable, and repeatable measure of viscous heating/heat build-up of a viscoelastic material.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un dispositif de mesure du chauffage/accumulation de la chaleur dans des matériaux viscoélastiques, lors du traitement de ceux-ci, tels que des composés à base de caoutchouc et de polymères. On mesure les changements de température se produisant dans le matériau viscoélastique lorsque l'on applique à ce matériau une force de cisaillement, cette application consistant à faire tourner une première matrice (25) (plaque supérieure) par rapport à une seconde matrice (26) (plaque inférieure), laquelle reste fixe. Les changements de température se produisant dans le matériau viscoélastique et qui peuvent être attribués à la friction entre la première matrice et une bague de scellement adjacente (27) sont pris en compte et soustraits des valeurs finales de température. La présente invention permet d'obtenir une mesure précise, quantifiable et renouvelable du chauffage /accumulation de chaleur visqueux d'un matériau viscoélastique.
