A traveling-wave device is provided with the conventional moving pistons eliminated. Acoustic energy circulates in a direction through a fluid within a torus (30). A side branch may be connected to the torus for transferring acoustic energy into or out of the torus. A regenerator (32) is located in the torus with a first heat exchanger (34) located on a first side of the regenerator downstream of the regenerator relative to the direction of the circulating acoustic energy; and a second heat exchanger (36) located on an upstream side of the regenerator. The improvement is a mass flux suppressor (46) located in the torus to minimize time-average mass flux of the fluid. In one embodiment, the device further includes a thermal buffer column (70) in the torus to thermally isolate the heat exchanger that is at the operating temperature of the device.

L'invention porte sur un dispositif à ondes progressives dont les pistons à déplacement traditionnel sont éliminés. Une énergie acoustique circule dans une direction à travers un fluide dans un tore (30). Une ramification latérale peut être raccordée au tore en vue de transférer l'énergie acoustique à l'intérieur ou à l'extérieur du tore. Un régénérateur (32) est placé dans le tore avec un premier échangeur de chaleur (34) placé sur le premier côté en aval du régénérateur par rapport au sens de circulation de l'énergie acoustique; et un second échangeur de chaleur (36) est placé sur le côté amont du régénérateur. L'amélioration porte sur un supresseur (46) de flux de masse placé dans le tore afin de minimiser le flux de masse à moyenne temporelle. Selon une réalisation, le dispositif comprend également une colonne (70) tampon thermique dans le tore de façon à isoler thermiquement l'échangeur de chaleur qui est à la température de fonctionnement du dispositif.
