The present invention provides a laser markable coating composition comprising a colorant and a polymeric material whose opacity changes substantially irreversibly when exposed to heat. Further provided in a heat responsive colorant particle comprising a colorant and the above polymeric material. An example of a suitable polymeric material that irreversibly changes in opacity is a styrene/acrylic microsphere. The coating composition offers advantages such as the ability to mark substrates at high line speeds and without creating dust or residues. A method for preparing a coated substrate suitable for heat marking comprising: a) providing a substrate; b) coating the substrate with a composition comprising a colorant, a first binder resin, and a first carrier to provide a first coated substrate; and c) coating the first coated substrate with a composition comprising a polymeric material whose opacity changes substantially irreversibly when exposed to heat, a second binder resin, and a second carrier to obtain said coated substrate.

L'invention concerne une composition de revêtement pouvant être marquée au laser, qui comprend un colorant et un matériau polymère dont l'opacité se modifie de manière sensiblement irréversible quand il est exposé à la chaleur. Elle concerne également une particule de colorant réagissant à la chaleur, qui comprend un colorant et le matériau polymère ci-dessus. Un exemple de matériau polymère approprié, dont l'opacité se modifie d'une manière irréversible, est constitué par une microsphère de styrène/acrylique. La composition de revêtement présente des avantages tels que l'aptitude à marquer des substrats à des vitesses de ligne élevées sans créer de poussière ou de résidus. L'invention concerne également un procédé qui permet de préparer un substrat revêtu convenant pour le marquage à chaud. Le procédé comprend les étapes suivantes: a) on prend un substrat; b) on recouvre ledit substrat d'une composition comprenant un colorant, un premier liant à base de résine et un premier véhicule, de façon à obtenir un premier substrat revêtu; et c) on recouvre le premier substrat revêtu d'une composition comprenant un matériau polymère dont l'opacité se modifie de manière sensiblement irréversible quand il est exposé à la chaleur, un second liant à base de résine et un second véhicule, de façon à obtenir ledit substrat revêtu.
