A method and a bipolar chopper for obtaining an output voltage from an a.c. input voltage supply, by continuously sampling the a.c. input voltage so as to produce a plurality of voltage samples during each cycle of the a.c. input voltage supply, selecting a fraction of each said voltage sample commensurate with a desired fractional power consumption thereof, and low-passing filtering said fraction of each said voltage sample. According to a preferred embodiment, the output voltage is sinusoidal and, for each voltage sample, a departure of the instantaneous voltage of the respective voltage sample from the desired voltage magnitude allows a commensurate fraction of the voltage sample to be output. This produces a clean sinusoidal waveform for the output voltage and preserves near unity power factor.

Procédé et découpeur bipolaire permettant d'obtenir une tension de sortie à partir d'une alimentation en tension d'entrée courant alternatif. Le procédé consiste à échantillonner en continu la tension d'entrée c.a. de façon à produire une pluralité d'échantillons de tension durant chaque cycle d'alimentation en tension d'entrée; à sélectionner une fraction de chaque échantillon de tension proportionnelle à la consommation fractionnaire désirée; et à filtrer passe-bas ladite fraction. Dans un mode de réalisation préféré, la tension de sortie est sinusoïdale et, pour chaque échantillon de tension, la différence entre la tension instantané de l'échantillon de tension et la magnitude de tension désirée permet d'émettre en sortie une fraction proportionnelle dudit échantillon. De cette manière, on obtient une onde sinusoïdale propre pour la tension de sortie et on maintient le facteur de puissance proche de l'unité.
