A reproduced signal controlling method and device for controlling the distribution characteristics of quantized data by adjusting the waveform equalization characteristics when a signal reproduced from a recording medium recorded with data according to a specified recording rule is subjected to quantization and waveform equalization. In order to reproduce data stably and more correctly even if the reproduced singal fluctuates locally due to noise. The number of occurrences of each level of quantized data is measured, a histogram of the numbers of occurrences of the levels is drawn based on the results of the measurement, and the waveform equalization characteristics are adjusted such that the distribution of the numbers of occurrences of the levels approaches a distribution obtained based on the specified recording rule.
