A coherent optical source, having a center frequency in the terahertz band can be generated. Two coherent optical sources (15, 20) of different frequencies can be mixed in a nonlinear crystal (50) to generate an optical source having a third distinct frequency in the terahertz frequency range. The third frequency, an idler frequency, equals the difference between pump and signal wave frequencies incident on the crystal. The pump and signal wave frequencies are selected so that their frequency difference is in the terahertz range and so that the interaction between the pump, signal, and idler wave frequencies is phase matched using a cross-Reststrahlen band dispersion-compensated phasematching technique.

L'invention se rapporte à un procédé pouvant générer une source optique cohérente ayant une fréquence centrale dans la bande de térahertz. Deux sources optiques cohérentes (15, 20) de fréquences différentes peuvent être mélangées dans un cristal non linéaire (50) afin de générer une source optique ayant une troisième fréquence distincte dans la gamme de fréquences de térahertz. La troisième fréquence, une fréquence idler, est égale à la différence entre les fréquences de pompage et d'onde signal incidentes sur le cristal. Les fréquences de pompage et d'onde signal sont choisies de sorte que la différence de leur fréquence se situe dans la gamme de térahertz, et que l'interaction de la fréquence de pompage, de la fréquence d'onde signal et de la fréquence idler soient adaptées en phase par une technique d'adaptation de phase à dispersion corrigée dans la bande Reststrahlen croisée.
