A flexible mechanism employing timers within the gateways (300) to facilitate efficient multiplexing. Timers (340, 342, 344) are provided, wherein their value can be adjusted on a dynamic basis depending on factors such as network congestion that impact end-to-end delay. The extraction of data from the buffers (330, 332, 334) is triggered when either the timer (370) expires or when the accumulated data reaches a certain size. There are two ways one could set the timer values. In the first case, the network operator chooses the value based on the known approximation of end-to-end delay. In the second case, the multiplexing controller (350) has the capability to extract the network delay information from the RTCP reports.

L'invention concerne un mécanisme souple utilisant des temporisateurs dans des passerelles (300), afin d'effectuer un multiplexage efficace. Il est possible de régler la valeur de ces temporisateurs (340, 342, 344) sur une base dynamique, en fonction de facteurs tels que l'encombrement du réseau qui agit sur un retard de bout en bout. L'extraction de données à partir des tampons (330, 332, 334) est déclenchée même si le temporisateur (370) expire, ou lorsque les données accumulées atteignent une certaine taille. On détermine les valeurs du temporisateur de deux manières. Dans le premier cas, l'opérateur réseau choisit la valeur en fonction de l'approximation connue du retard bout en bout. Dans le second cas, l'unité de commande (350) de multiplexage peut extraire les informations de retard de réseau à partir des comptes-rendus RTCP.
