A portable product authentication device (20) and method for analyzing key ingredients and the relative amounts of key ingredients in products which in turn enables authentication and monitoring products for authenticity, fraud and quality control is disclosed. Particular light-emissive compounds can be used to identify and quantitate the relative levels of key ingredients in the products. The invention includes a probe assembly (24) for providing a source of light to irradiate a sample product, an optical detector (60) to detect emitted light from the irradiated product and a controller (63) to determine the authenticity or quality of the sample product by comparing the emitted light to a standard. A small sample of the product to be authenticated is tested on site (e.g., at the point of manufacture or at the point of distribution) thereby giving immediate feedback as to its authenticity or quality. The sample, together with the light-emissive compound may be placed on a chip (200). The chip, together with the small amount of sample is placed in the probe assembly.

La présente invention concerne un dispositif portable d'authentification de produits et un procédé permettant d'analyser des composants clés et les quantités relatives de composants clés contenus dans des produits, ce qui permet alors l'authentification des produits et la surveillance de leur authenticité, de la fraude et le contrôle de la qualité. Des composés photoémetteurs particuliers peuvent être utilisés pour identifier et quantifier les niveaux relatifs des composants clés contenus dans les produits. Cette invention inclut un ensemble sonde comprenant une source lumineuse permettant d'irradier un produit échantillon, un détecteur optique permettant de détecter la lumière émise par le produit irradié, et un contrôleur permettant de déterminer l'authenticité ou la qualité du produit échantillon par comparaison de la lumière émise à une norme. Un petit échantillon du produit à authentifier est testé sur site ( par exemple sur le lieu de fabrication ou de distribution) donnant ainsi une réponse immédiate quant à l'authenticité ou à la qualité. Cet échantillon peut être placé avec le composé photoémetteur sur une puce. Cette puce est placée avec la petite quantité d'échantillon dans l'ensemble sonde.
