An external calibration method comprises the steps of transmitting a first reference signal from a reference transmitter; receiving the first reference signal at first and second receiver systems; (10-2A-10-2C); determining a first error value by comparing a measured TDOA value with a theoretical TDOA value associated with the known locations of the receiver systems and the known location of the reference transmitter; and utilizing the first error value to correct subsequent TDOA measurements associated with a mobile transmitter to be located. An internal calibration method comprises the steps of injecting a comb signal into the first receiver system; utilizing the comb signal to obtain an estimate of the manner in which the transfer function varies across the bandwidth of the first receiver system; and utilizing the estimate to mitigate the effects of the variation of the first transfer function on the time measurement made by the first receiver system.

La présente invention concerne un procédé et un appareil d'étalonnage de système de radiolocalisation permettant au système de faire des mesures très précises des différentiels de fréquence ou de temps d'arrivée (TDOA et FDOA). L'invention concerne plus particulièrement un système d'étalonnage externe consistant d'abord à émettre un premier signal de référence à partir d'un émetteur de référence, puis à recevoir le premier signal de référence au niveau d'un premier et d'un second système récepteur. Le procédé consiste ensuite à mesurer une première valeur d'erreur par comparaison entre une valeur mesurée du TDOA (ou FDOA) et une valeur théorique du TDOA (ou FDOA) correspondant à chacune des positions connues des systèmes récepteurs et la position connue de l'émetteur de référence. Le procédé consiste enfin à utiliser la première valeur d'erreur pour corriger les mesures ultérieures du TDOA correspondant à un émetteur mobile à localiser. Un procédé d'étalonnage interne selon la présente invention consiste à injecter au premier système récepteur un signal en peigne, à utiliser le signal en peigne pour évaluer le mode de variation de la fonction de transfert dans toute la largeur de bande du premier système récepteur, et enfin à utiliser ce résultat pour atténuer les effets de la variation de la première fonction de transfert sur les mesures de temps faites par le premier système récepteur.
