The present invention provides a method and system in which the lower address bits of an IP address are used as a mobile station's short identifier. According to exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the operator of a MSC/PMSC node is normally assigned, from an ISP, several class C-networks to provide to its packet mobile subscribers. When these networks are chosen with the same high order bits, as is most often the case, it is possible to directly map the lower bits of the IP-address to a unique key value that could be used within the node. For a PPDC-node, this key value can be used as a short mobile station identifier in the LAPDm protocol. For other data-link protocols on other platforms, it is also possible to use the new key value as a short identifier for the mobile station. Therefore, the translation process turns simply into a matter of adding or removing the high order bits in order to convert the IP address into the mobile station identifier.

L'invention porte sur un procédé et un système dans lequel les bits inférieurs d'une adresse IP servent d'identificateur court d'une station mobile. Selon les exemples illustrés de l'invention, l'exploitant d'un noeud MSC/PMSC se voit normalement attribué par un ISP, plusieurs réseaux de classe C pour ses abonnés de paquets mobiles. Ces réseaux étant choisis avec le même nombre de bits d'ordre supérieur,, ce qui est le plus souvent le cas, il est possible de faire correspondre les bits inférieurs de l'adresse IP à une seule valeur de code utilisable dans le noeud. Pour un noeud PPDC, cette valeur de code peut servir d'identificateur dans le protocole LAPDm. Pour les autres protocoles de lignes de données des autres plates-formes, on peut également utiliser de nouvelles valeurs de code comme identificateur court de la station mobile. C'est pourquoi le processus de traduction se réduit simplement à l'adjonction ou au retrait des bits d'ordre supérieur pour convertir l'adresse IP en identificateur de station mobile.
