A method and apparatus for synchronizing the execution of a sequence of graphics pipelines is provided. For a representative embodiment a sequence of graphics pipelines are connected in a daisy-chain sequence. Each pipeline operates can be controlled to operate in one of two modes. The first is a local mode where the pipeline outputs its own digital video data. The second is a pass-through mode where the pipeline outputs digital video data received from preceding graphics pipelines. The pipelines are configured to allow an application executing on a host process to select the next pipeline that will enter local mode operation. The pipeline that is selected to enter local mode operation asserts a local ready signal when it is ready to begin outputting its digital video information. The selected pipeline enters local mode operation. The remaining pipelines in the sequence either enter or remain in pass-through mode operation.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil de synchronisation d'exécution d'une séquence de pipelines graphiques. Dans un mode de réalisation représentatif, une séquence de pipelines graphiques est reliée en guirlande. Chaque pipeline peut être commandé pour fonctionner selon l'un de deux modes. Le premier mode est un mode local, selon lequel les pipelines sortent leurs propres données vidéo numériques. Le second mode est un mode intercommunication, selon lequel les pipelines sortent des données vidéo numériques provenant de pipelines graphiques précédents. Les pipelines sont montés de façon à permettre à une application s'exécutant sur un processeur hôte de sélectionner le prochain pipeline qui entrera en fonctionnement en mode local. Le pipeline sélectionné pour entrer en fonctionnement en mode local établit un signal local de disponibilité, lorsqu'il est prêt à commencer à sortir ses informations vidéo numériques. Le pipeline sélectionné entre en fonctionnement en mode local. Les pipelines restants dans la séquence, soit entrent, soit restent en fonctionnement en mode intercommunication.
