A distributed processing system (10) includes a plurality of cells (12, 14, 16, 18, 20) where each cell processes information in response to a type of event, and cells communicate with each other according to an (asynchronous) event-reaction protocol. According to one embodiment, each cell is responsive to a single type of event and includes a plurality of scripts (12a, 14a, 16a, 18a, 20a) which are executed upon the occurrence of an event of the appropriate type. At least some scripts include directions to send information to one or more scripts in another cell. According to another embodiment, some cells communicate with other cells according to a (synchronous) streaming protocol and other cells communicate according to an (asynchronous) event-reaction protocol. The cells communicates protocol utilized by the cells enables the use of virtually any networking medium. Thus, cells may reside in the same chip or may be separated from each other by thousands of miles.

On décrit un système de traitement réparti comprenant une pluralité de cellules qui traitent chacune des informations en réponse à un type d'événement, lesdites cellules communiquant entre elles conformément à un protocole de réaction aux événements (asynchrone). Selon une forme de réalisation de l'invention, chaque cellule réagit à un seul type d'événement et comprend une pluralité de scripts qui sont exécutés lorsqu'il se produit un événement du type approprié. Au moins certains scripts comprennent des directives les obligeant à envoyer des informations à un ou plusieurs autres scripts d'une autre cellule. Selon une autre forme de réalisation, certaines cellules communiquent avec d'autres cellules conformément à un protocole en continu (synchrone) et d'autres cellules communiquent conformément à un protocole de réaction aux événements (asynchrone). Les cellules communiquent entre elles par l'intermédiaire d'une mémoire partagée ou d'un bus de communication. Le protocole de communication utilisé par les cellules permet d'utiliser virtuellement n'importe quel moyen de mise en réseau. Par conséquent des cellules peuvent se situer sur la même puce ou bien être séparées les unes des autres de plusieurs milliers de kilomètres.
