Apparatus and method are provided for the control of the relative position of two optical structures, such as a lenticular screen (2) and corresponding barrier screen (1), such as are typically used in an autostereoscopic display. The provision of special patterns on the barrier screen combined with the use of specific lens elements (4) of the lenticular screen provides for a stable and accurately located viewing zone, without the need for the structural stablity which would be demanded using independent position monitoring means for each of the components. Both lateral and longitudinal control of the location of the viewing zones are easily provided and manufacturing tolerances and dimensional changes which may be caused by thermal effects are automatically accommodated with a tapered lenticular structure. The patterns are constructed so that a short fragment of the image thereof (9, 10, 11) is unambiguously identifiable, enabling the precise measurement of a range of relative positions which exceeds the practical field of view of the lens elements.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un dispositif de commande de la position relative de deux structures optiques, telles qu'un écran lenticulaire (2) et un écran barrière correspondant (1), du type de ceux généralement utilisés dans un affichage autostéréoscopique. En combinant l'utilisation de motifs spéciaux figurant sur l'écran barrière, à celle d'éléments de lentille spécifiques (4) de l'écran lenticulaire, on peut obtenir une zone de visualisation stable et située de manière précise, sans qu'il soit nécessaire d'obtenir une stabilité structurelle, laquelle serait requise si l'on utilisait des moyens indépendants de surveillance de position, pour chaque composant. La maîtrise à la fois latérale et longitudinale de l'emplacement des zones de visualisation s'obtient aisément, et les tolérances de fabrication et changements dimensionnels pouvant être provoqués par des effets thermiques sont automatiquement compensés au moyen d'une structure lenticulaire conique. Les motifs sont construits de façon qu'un fragment court de l'image de ceux-ci (9, 10, 11) puisse être identifié de manière non ambiguë, ce qui permet de mesurer précisément un ensemble de positions relatives dépassant le champ pratique de vision des éléments de lentille.
