A velocity independent method of predicting surface related multiples in any gather of seismic traces, (10). In one embodiment, the method comprises the steps of regularizing the gather of seismic data traces, (12) and performing a double Fourier transformation from the x-t domain to the Kx-w domain, (24), and decomposing the transformed seismic data traces into uncoupled amplitude and phase spectra, and obtaining an estimate of the surface related multiples, (25), by scaling the amplitude spectrum by one half the value of the reflected coefficient for the first reflection below the earth surface and by doubling the phase spectrum. The estimated multiples, (25), may then be used for automated velocity determination or for multiple attenuation in the original data.

L'invention porte sur un procédé, indépendant de la vitesse, de prévision des réflexions multiples superficielles (20), présentes dans tout recueil de traces sismiques. Dans l'une des exécutions le procédé consiste à régulariser le recueil de traces de données sismiques, puis à effectuer une double transformée de Fourier (22) transférant les traces sismiques du domaine x-t au domaine Kx-w (24), puis à décomposer lesdites traces en spectres d'amplitude et de phase non couplés. On obtient une évaluation des réflexions multiples superficielles (25) en multipliant le spectre d'amplitude par la moitié du coefficient de réflexion pour les premières réflexions sous la surface du sol et en doublant le spectre de phase. Les réflexions multiples (25) ainsi évaluées peuvent servir à déterminer automatiquement la vitesse, et à atténuer les réflexion multiples présentes dans les données originales.
