The subject invention relates to the identification of a gene involved in the desaturation of polyunsaturated fatty acids at carbon 5 (i.e., 'human $g(D)5-desaturase') and to uses thereof. In particular, human $g(D)5-desaturase may be utilized, for example, in the conversion of dihomo-$g(g) - linolenic acid (DGLA) to arachidonic acid (AA) and in the conversion of 20:4n-3 to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). AA or polyunsaturated fatty acids produced therefrom may be added to pharmaceutical compositions, nutritional compositions, animal feeds, as well as other products such as cosmetics.

L'invention concerne l'identification d'un gène intervenant dans la désaturation d'acides gras polyinsaturés en position carbone 5 (à savoir, '$g(D)5-désaturase humain') et ses utilisations. En particulier, ce gène peut être utilisé, par exemple, pour la conversion d'acide dihomo-$g(g)- linolénique (GGLA) en acide arachidonique (AA) et la conversion de 20:4n-3 en acide eicosapentanoïque (EPA). L'acide arachidonique ou les acides gras polyinsaturés résultants peuvent être ajoutés à des compositions pharmaceutiques ou nutritives, à des aliments pour animaux, ainsi qu'à d'autres produits du type cosmétiques.
