The design, synthesis, and use of cyclic compounds, including cyclic polyamides, is described. Such compounds comprise at least two polymer portions, one of which comprises at least three molecular units, and the other comprises at least four molecular units. At least one molecular unit of such a compound is a hydrogen bond donor or acceptor. The polymer portions are covalently linked to form a cycle. These compounds are capable of targeting specific nucleotide sequences in double-stranded nucleic acids, particularly double-stranded DNA. Accordingly, such compounds can be used to modulate, e.g., increase or decrease, the expression of one or more genes $i(in vitro) or $i(in vivo).

La présente invention concerne la mise au point, la synthèse et l'utilisation de composés cycliques, y compris des polyamides cycliques. Lesdits composés comprennent au moins deux parties polymères, l'une d'elles comprenant au moins trois unités moléculaires et l'autre comprenant au moins quatre unités moléculaires. Au moins une unité moléculaire de ces composés est donatrice ou receveuse d'une liaison hydrogène. Les parties polymères sont liées par covalence de manière à former un cycle. Ces composés sont capables de cibler des séquences nucléotidiques spécifiques dans des acides nucléiques bicaténaires, en particulier l'ADN bicaténaire. Par conséquent, lesdits composés peuvent s'utiliser afin de moduler, par exemple augmenter ou diminuer, l'expression d'un ou plusieurs gènes $i(in vitro) ou $i(in vivo).
