In a method of and apparatus (10) for manufacturing methanol (40) from methane, a catalytic area (16) is formed on the exterior of a hollow sintered stainless steel tube (12). Methane is maintained within the sintered stainless steel tube (12) at predetermined pressure, and water continuously flowing across the exterior surface thereof strips the methane forming sub-micron sized methane bubbles. Light energy (20) is directed onto the catalytic surface to form hydroxyl radicals from the flowing water. The hydroxyl radicals cleave the carbon-hydrogen bonds of the methane to form methyl ions which combine with the hydroxyl ions to form methanol.

Procédé et appareil (10) de production de méthanol (40) à partir de méthane. Ledit appareil comporte un tube creux en acier inoxydable fritté (12) qui porte une zone de catalyse (16) sur sa face externe. Du méthane est maintenu à l'intérieur du tube en acier inoxydable fritté (12) à une pression prédéterminée, et de l'eau coulant en continu sur la surface externe dudit tube évacue le méthane qui forme des bulles d'une taille inférieure au micron. De l'énergie lumineuse (20) est dirigée sur la surface de catalyse pour former des radicaux hydroxyle à partir de l'eau en écoulement. Les radicaux hydroxyle cassent les liaisons carbone-hydrogène du méthane pour former des ions de méthyle qui se combinent avec les ions d'hydroxyle pour former du méthanol.
