A colorant-free thermally imaged substrate is disclosed, made by a method of using a heating element without ink or toner present to alter the gloss or orientation of a polymeric substrate wherein the heating element is controlled to provide a digital image having a resolution of from about 25 to about 1200 dots per inch (dpi). The thermal imaging method results in a gloss differential image having a resolution such at that obtained in thermal mass transfer printing techniques, but without the color. The gloss differential of the thermal image can be measured or monitored on product inventory or quality control equipment.

On décrit un substrat sur lequel l'image est produite par un procédé d'imagerie thermique sans colorant dans lequel on utilise un élément chauffant en l'absence d'encre ou de toner pour altérer la brillance ou l'orientation d'un substrat polymère, ledit élément chauffé étant commandé pour produire une image numérique dont la résolution se situe entre environ 25 et environ 1200 points par pouce (ppp). Ce procédé d'imagerie thermique produit une image à brillance différentielle ayant une résolution telle que celle obtenue au moyen de techniques d'impression par transfert thermique, mais sans la couleur. L'écart de brillance de l'image thermique peut être mesuré ou détecté avec un appareil de dénombrement des produits ou de contrôle de la qualité des produits.
