An apparatus for adjusting working distance between a tool and work surface by automatically setting and adjusting the working distance between the tool and workpiece. In a preferred embodiment, the inventive apparatus and method is used to set and maintain the working distance of a dispenser (101) above a substrate (106) so as to provide a consistent coating thickness across the substrate. The apparatus preferably employs a distance sensor (102) to sense the distance (105) between the tool and workpiece. When the sensor reports that the working distance has deviated from ideal setting, a control system employs either a P.I.D. control scheme, host software (204) or a dedicated processor (205) to perform a working distance control function wherein the ideal working distance is restored.

L'invention concerne un appareil permettant de régler une distance de travail séparant un outil et une surface de travail en fixant et en réglant automatiquement la distance de travail séparant l'outil et la pièce concernée. Dans un mode de réalisation préféré, l'appareil et le procédé selon l'invention servent à fixer et à maintenir la distance de travail d'un atomiseur (101) au-dessus d'un substrat (106) de façon à obtenir une épaisseur de revêtement consistante sur tout le substrat. De préférence, l'appareil utilise un détecteur (102) permettant de détecter la distance (105) séparant l'outil et la pièce concernée. Lorsque le détecteur indique que la distance de travail s'est modifiée par rapport au réglage idéal, un système de commande utilise soit un plan de commande proportionnelle, intégrale et dérivée, soit un logiciel hôte (204), soit un processeur spécialisé (205) afin d'exécuter une fonction de commande de la distance de travail permettant de restaurer la distance de travail idéale.
