This invention is a method and apparatus for implanting retinal tacks (6) and retinal electrode element (20) with spiked electrodes (23). In one aspect of the invention, a tack suitable for insertion into the retina (9) is driven into the retina (9) by the repeated minute blows from the rapid contractions and expansions of the piezoelectric crystal (3). In a different aspect of the invention, a retinal electrode element (20) with spiked electrodes (23) suitable for insertion into the retina (9) is driven into the retina by the repeated minute blows from the rapid contractions and expansions of the piezoelectric crystal. In another aspect of the invention, a single, short impulse is used to drive the tack home. In a different aspect of the invention, a single, short impulse is used to drive the retinal electrode element (20) with spiked electrodes (23) home. With this mode of tack and electrode element (20) implanting, a remotely placed driver couples its motion to the tack using a thin, elongated tube filled with a suitable hydraulic fluid.

L'invention concerne une technique et un dispositif servant à implanter des pointes (6) rétiniennes et un élément (20) électrode rétinienne avec des électrodes (23) à broches. Dans un mode de réalisation de cette invention, une pointe conçue pour être inserée dans la rétine (9) est amenée dans cette dernière (9) par de très petits coups répétés, générés par les contractions et les expansions rapides du crystal (3) piézoélectrique. Dans un autre mode de réalisation de l'invention, un élément (20) d'électrode rétinienne avec des électrodes (23) à broches conçues pour être inserées dans la rétine (9) est amené dans cette dernière par de très petits coups répétés, générés par les contractions et les expansions rapides du crystal piézoélectrique. Dans un autre mode de réalisation de ladite invention, une seule impulsion de courte durée est utilisée pour mettre en place la pointe. Selon un mode réalisation différent, une seule impulsion de courte durée est utilisée pour mettre en place l'élément (20) d'électrode rétinienne avec des électrodes (23) à broches. Parallèlement à cette technique d'implantation d'élément (20) d'électrode et de pointe, un conducteur placé à distance couple son mouvement à celui de la pointe par le biais d'un tube fin, allongé, rempli d'un fluide hydraulique approprié.
