An improved membrane electrode assembly for PEM fuel cells is provided. Catalyst layers (40, 44) are disposed, respectively, on both sides of the proton exchange membrane (48). Gas diffusion layers (38, 50) are disposed, respectively, on sides of the catalyst layers (40, 44) not in contact with the proton exchange membrane (48). Porous substrates (32, 34) are disposed, respectively, on sides of the gas diffusion layers (38, 50) not in contact with the catalyst layers (40, 44). The porous substrates (32, 34) are impregnated at their periphery with a thermoplastic material. Thermoplastic film layers (42, 46, 68) are employed at the periphery of the assembly (10) between component parts to bond and seal water transport plates (12' and 16) to each other, as well as substrates (32, 32', 34) to the membrane electrode assembly (20). A foam tape (60, 62, 62') is employed to seal water transport plates (12, 12', 16) to respective substrates (32, 32', 34).

L'invention concerne un ensemble électrodes à membrane amélioré pour pile à combustible à membrane échangeuse de protons (MEP). Des couches de catalyseur (40, 44) sont disposées respectivement sur les deux côtés de la membrane échangeuse de protons (48). Des couches (38, 50) de diffusion de gaz sont disposées respectivement sur les côtés des couches de catalyseur (40, 44) qui ne communiquent pas avec la membrane échangeuse de protons (48). Des substrats poreux (32, 34) sont disposés respectivement sur les côtés des couches (38, 50) de diffusion de gaz qui ne communiquent pas avec les couches de catalyseur (40, 44). Les substrats poreux (32, 34) sont imprégnés, sur leur périphérie, d'un matériau thermoplastique. Les couches de films thermoplastiques (42, 46, 68) sont utilisées, sur la périphérie de l'ensemble (10), entre les éléments du composant pour coller et sceller les unes aux autres les plaques d'écoulement d'eau (12' et 16), ainsi que les substrats (32, 32', 34) à l'ensemble électrodes à membrane(20). Un ruban de mousse (60, 62, 62') est utilisé pour sceller les plaques d'écoulement d'eau (12, 12', 16) aux substrats correspondants (32, 32', 34).
