A liquid crystal display in which a pair of substrates having electrodes are opposed to each other, and a liquid crystal is sealed inbetween them, wherein an area of which the width is narrower than that of a pixel region and which is larger than half of the pixel region is provided on an electrode (42) of at least one substrate, an insulating layer (46) for varying the direction of the electric field in the pixel region when a voltage is applied between the substrates is provided, whereby the liquid crystal molecules are perpendicular or parallel to the lines of electric force when a voltage is applied between the substrates, and hence the direction of electric field is varied, thereby reducing the variation in luminance when viewed from different direction, improving the visual angle characteristics, and suppressing gradation inversion.

L'invention porte sur un écran à cristaux liquides dans lequel est ménagée une paire de substrats pourvus d'électrodes opposées, un cristal liquide étant scellé hermétiquement entre les substrats. Dans une zone d'une électrode (42) d'au moins un substrat, la largeur est plus étroite que celle d'un région de pixels et plus grande que la moitié d'une région de pixels; une couche isolante permet de varier le sens du champ électrique de la région de pixels lorsqu'une tension est appliquée entre les substrats. Les molécules du cristal liquide sont perpendiculaires ou parallèles au lignes de la force électrique lorsqu'une tension est appliquée entre les susbtrats, et par conséquent, le sens du champ électrique varie, ce qui réduit la variation de luminance lorsqu'on le regarde à partir d'un autre sens, améliore les caractéristiques angulaires visuelles et supprime l'inversion de gradation.
