Improved beam steering and scanning devices utilize cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) elements (60) arranged in branches (1-16) to form a logic tree structure. Each branch thereof comprises an active (18) and passive (19) CLC element; the former further comprising a half-wave retarder (61) and an electrode (62) and the latter only the CLC element. Each succeeding branch contains twice as many branches as a preceding branch and, by activating active CLC element electrodes under control of a programmable pulsed source (27), inputs applied to the first stage of a logic tree are delivered as a scanned line of electromagnetic energy or light to the imaging cells of the last stage of the logic tree. By stacking identical logic tree structures with a laser source (17) for each tree, a flat panel imaging array or display panel is formed in which the transmission intensity losses are minimized. In a similar imaging array, inputs-outputs interconnection of the logic trees, where an input logic tree is positioned perpendicularly to the similar logic trees, can be used to produce 2-D and 3-D images by applying a modulation to laser sources from standard television cameras, and cameras designed to capture stereo-displaced images, respectively.

Dispositifs améliorés à balayage et à pointage du faisceau qui possèdent des éléments (60) à cristaux liquides cholestériques (CLC) disposés en branches (1-16) pour former une structure d'arbre logique. Chaque branche comporte un élément CLC actif (18) et passif (19). L'élément actif comporte en outre un retardateur à demi-onde (61) et une électrode (62) et l'élément passif uniquement l'élément CLC. Chaque branche suivante contient deux fois plus de branches qu'une branche précédente et par l'activation d'électrodes des éléments CLC actifs sous la commande d'une source pulsée programmable (27), des entrées appliquées au premier étage d'un arbre logique sont fournies en tant que ligne balayée d'énergie électromagnétique ou de lumière aux cellules de production d'images du dernier étage de l'arbre logique. L'empilement de structures d'arbres logiques identiques avec une source laser (17) pour chaque arbre permet la formation d'un écran d'affichage ou d'imagerie plat dans lequel les pertes d'intensité de transmission sont réduites à un minimum. Dans un groupement de photodétecteurs similaire, l'interconnexion d'entrées-sorties des arbres logiques, là où un arbre logique d'entrée est placé perpendiculairement aux arbres logiques similaires, peut être utilisée pour produire des images en deux et en trois dimensions par application d'une modulation à des sources laser provenant de caméras de télévision standard et de caméras destinées à saisir des images à déplacement stéréo respectivement.
