The present invention measures agglutination using a process which is capable of testing how tightly agglutinated cells are bonded by measuring how much force is required to separate them. By causing red cells which are approximately biconcave discs to sphere, the effective surface area available for bonding diminishes. Sphering a cell increases the space between antigen binding sites and increases the mean distance across which bonding occurs. As the surface area available for bonding between cells decreases as cells sphere they lose bonding strength, thus allowing clumped cells to separate. By recording the inducing pressure and the number of cells (or quantities related to it) as they change with respect to the inducing pressure, agglutination can be detected, quantified and monitored. This provides a simple but effective test for blood grouping and cross-matching by introducing an appropriate source of antibodies and detecting whether or not agglutination occurs.

La présente invention permet de mesurer l'agglutination à l'aide d'un procédé qui permet de détecter comment les globules étroitement agglutinés sont liés en mesurant la force requise pour les séparer. Ce procédé consiste à amener les globules rouges qui sont des disques biconcaves à adopter une forme sphérique, ce qui provoque la réduction de la surface utile disponible pour la liaison, augmente l'espace entre les sites de liaison des antigènes et on augmente également la distance moyenne dans laquelle se produit la liaison. Lors de la diminution de la surface utile disponible pour la liaison entre les cellules diminue, et lorsque les globules prennent une forme sphérique, ils perdent de leur force de liaison, ce qui permet de les séparer. L'enregistrement de la pression d'induction et du nombre de globules (ou des quantités s'y rapportant) lors de leur changement en fonction de ladite pression permet de détecter, de quantifier et de contrôler l'agglutination. Ce système constitue un procédé simple et efficace pour déterminer les groupes sanguins etes compatibilités croisées, en introduisant une source appropriée d'anticorps et en détectant si l'agglutination se produit ou non.
