Preactivated unsupported catalysts are disclosed whereby an unsupported olefin polymerization catalyst precursor is contacted with an activator, or co-catalyst, to form a preactivated unsupported catalyst. The preactivated unsupported catalyst is useful in a method of polymerizing an olefin monomer by adding it, in solution or slurry, to a gas phase polymerization reactor together with one or more olefins to form a polymer, copolymer, terpolymer, or the like. The use of these preactivated unsupported catalysts avoids the need to use substantial amounts of hydrocarbon solvents, and avoids the need to use toxic aromatic or chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents.

L'invention concerne des catalyseurs sans support préactivés, qu'on forme en mettant en contact un précurseur de catalyseur de polymérisation d'oléfine sans support et un activateur, ou un cocatalyseur. Le catalyseur sans support préactivé est utile dans un procédé de polymérisation d'un monomère d'oléfine dans lequel on met ledit catalyseur en contact, sous forme de solution ou de boue, dans un réacteur de polymérisation en phase gazeuse avec une ou plusieurs oléfines pour former un polymère, un copolymère, un terpolymère ou analogue. L'utilisation de ces catalyseurs sans support préactivés permet d'éviter de devoir utiliser des quantités importantes de solvants d'hydrocarbure et des solvants d'hydrocarbure aromatiques ou chlorés toxiques.
