Novel liquid crystal compounds which exhibit high negative anisotropy of permittivity, and are excellent in low-temperature compatibility with other liquid crystal compounds, lowly viscous and chemically and physically stable; liquid crystal compositions containing the same; and liquid crystal displays made by using the compositions. The liquid crystal compounds are represented by general formula (1), where in A1, A2, A3 and A4 are each a single bond, 1,4-cyclohexylene, optionally fluorinated 1,4-phenylene, or the like; B1, B2, B3 and B4 are each a single bond, 1,2-ethylene, 1,2-ethenylene, 1,2-ethynylene, oxymethylene, methylene-oxy, or the like; R1 and R2 are each C1-C10 alkyl or the like; and Z is a group represented by general formula (I), (II), (III), (IV), (V) or (VI), wherein X is H or F; and Y is difluoromethyl, difluoromethoxy, formyl or carboxyl.

L'invention porte sur de nouveaux composés de cristaux liquides qui présentent une anisotropie de permittivité extrêmement négative, et une excellente compatibilité à basse température avec d'autres composés de cristaux liquides, légèrement visqueux et chimiquement et physiquement stables. L'invention porte également sur des compositions de cristaux liquides contenant ces composés, et sur des afficheurs à cristaux liquides obtenus au moyen de ces compositions. Les composés de cristaux liquides sont représentés par la formule générale (1) dans laquelle A1, A2, A3 et A4 représentent, chacun, une liaison unique, 1,4-cyclohexylène, 1,4-phénylène éventuellement fluoré ou autre; B1, B2, B3 et B4 représentent, chacun, une liaison unique, 1,2-éthylène, 1,2-éthénylène, 1,2-éthynylène, oxyméthylène, méthylène-oxy ou autre; R1 et R2 représentent, chacun, C1-C10 alkyle ou autre; et Z est un groupe représenté par la formule générale (I), (II), (III), (IV), (V) ou (VI) (dans lesquelles X représente H ou F; et Y représente difluorométhyle, difluorométhoxy, formyle ou carboxyle).
