Abstract

A welding electrode (102) and a workpiece connected with a welding power source (106) are simultaneously connected to at least two additional high voltage power sources (110, 112). A short aperiodic high voltage pulse is transmistted from the firt high voltage power source (110) to a gap between the electrode and the workpiece, creating an electric discharge and current conducting duct in the air between the electrode (102) and the workpiece. This short pulse is superimposed by another long, high voltage pulse from the second high voltage power source (112). A stretched pulse appears, and the duration of the current discharge increases. The current conducting duct is heated, its resistance decreases and an arc is ignited. When the voltage in the current conducting duct decreases to a value less than that of the open circuit of the welding power source (106), welding current starts flowing from the latter through the welding electrode (102) and arc to the workpiece.

Dans cette invention, une électrode de soudage (102) et une pièce reliées par une alimentation de soudage (106) sont reliées simultanément à au moins deux alimentations haute tension supplémentaires (110, 112). On transmet une courte impulsion apériodique haute tension de la première alimentation haute tension (110) à l'intervalle situé entre l'électrode et la pièce, de manière à générer une décharge électrique et à créer un passage électro-conducteur dans l'air entre l'électrode (102) et la pièce. On superpose sur cette courte impulsion une autre impulsion haute tension plus longue provenant de la seconde alimentation haute tension (112). On obtient alors une impulsion étendue et la durée de la décharge de courant augmente. On chauffe ensuite le passage électro-conducteur. Sa résistance diminue alors et un arc s'allume. Lorsque la tension du passage électro-conducteur diminue jusqu'à une valeur inférieure à celle du circuit ouvert de l'alimentation de soudage (106), le courant de soudage commence à s'écouler de cette dernière via l'électrode de soudage (102) et l'arc jusqu'à la pièce.
