Apparatus (10) and method of forming a deep sea pipeline or a cross country pipeline by welding pipes together to form the pipeline. Two pipes (2, 4) are arranged so that their ends (26, 27) define a circumferentially extending narrow angled (less than 10 degrees) groove (28). At least two arc welding torches (1) are arranged directly adjacent to each other on a single carriage that moves around the pipes, to form a twin arc welding system. The arcs of the torches (1) form a weld (3) in the groove. The carriage is moved around the pipe, the torches thus moving around the pipe with the same speed. Each torch (1) is independently oscillated so that the position of its arc oscillates between the walls of the groove. The arcs are guided automatically by an electronic guidance system, wherein electrical characteristics (such as arc current or voltage) of the welding of each torch (1) with regard to each pipe (2, 4), respectively, are ascertained and a comparison made between the electrical characteristics relating to one of the pipes with the corresponding electrical characteristics relating to the other of the pipes. The position of an arc of a torch (1) may thus be aligned with the centre line of the groove (28).

L'invention se rapporte à un appareil (10) et à un procédé de fabrication d'une conduite sous-marine pour grande profondeur ou d'une conduite de très longue portée, par soudage de tuyaux entre eux. On dispose deux tuyaux (2, 4) de manière que leurs extrémités (26, 27) définissent une gorge (28) disposée circonférentiellement et formant un angle faible ( moins de 10 degrés). Au moins deux torches de soudage à l'arc (1) sont disposées de manière directement adjacentes l'une à l'autre sur un unique chariot qui se déplace autour des tuyaux de façon à former un système de soudage à l'arc jumelé. Les arcs des torches (1) forment une soudure (3) dans la gorge. Le chariot est déplacé autour du tuyau et, de ce fait, les torches se déplacent autour du tuyau à la même vitesse. Chaque torche (1) est amenée à osciller indépendamment de sorte que la position de son arc oscille entre les parois de la gorge. Ces arcs sont guidés automatiquement par un système de guidage électronique, dans lequel des caractéristiques électriques de chaque torche (1) (telles que l'intensité du courant et la tension) s'agissant du soudage respectif de chacun des tuyaux (2, 4), sont déterminées et une comparaison effectuée entre les caractéristiques électriques relatives à l'un des tuyaux et les caractéristiques électriques correspondantes relatives à l'autre tuyau. Il est également possible d'aligner l'arc d'une torche (1) avec la ligne médiane de la gorge (28).
