A welding apparatus, for welding pipe sections (1, 2) together to form an underwater pipeline, is arranged to weld pipe sections (1, 2) together when they are in a generally upright orientation with the bottom of an upper pipe section (2) abutting the top of a lower pipe section (1) that defines the end of a pipeline. The welding apparatus includes a rotary equipment holder (5) mounted for rotation about a generally vertical axis (8) and having a central opening (5A) through which pipe sections (1, 2) are able to pass as a pipeline is laid, a plurality of welding heads (12) angularly spaced about the rotary equipment holder (5), each head (12) being associated with a respective sector of the rotary equipment holder, and a welding head guide assembly (11) for fixing around a pipe section (1). The guide assembly (11) includes a guide track (14) for guiding movement of each of the welding heads (12) around the pipe section (1). The respective sector of the rotary equipment holder (5) is able to revolve around the pipe section (1) as the associated welding head (12) revolves around the pipe section (1).

L'invention se rapporte à un appareil à souder permettant de raccorder des sections de tuyaux (1, 2) dans le but de former une canalisation sous-marine. Cet appareil est conçu pour souder l'une à l'autre des sections de tuyaux (1, 2) lorsque celles-ci se trouvent généralement en position verticale, la partie inférieure de la section de tuyau supérieur (2) étant en contact d'aboutement avec la partie supérieure de la section du tuyau inférieur (1) qui définit l'extrémité d'une canalisation. Cet appareil à souder comporte un organe de support d'équipement rotatif (5) qui est monté rotatif autour d'un axe (8) généralement vertical et présente une ouverture centrale (5A) à travers laquelle les sections de tuyaux (1, 2) peuvent passer lors de la pose d'une canalisation, une pluralité de têtes de soudage (12) espacées de manière angulaire autour du support d'équipement rotatif (5), chacune de ces têtes (12) étant associée à un secteur respectif du support de l'équipement rotatif, et un ensemble de guidage (11) des têtes de soudage conçu pour être fixé autour d'une section de tuyau (1). Ledit ensemble de guidage (11) comporte une piste (14) destinée à guider le déplacement de chacune des têtes de soudage (12) autour de la section de tuyau (19). Le secteur respectif du support d'équipement rotatif (5) a la possibilité de tourner autour de la section de tuyau (1) lorsque la tête de soudage associée (12) tourne autour de ladite section de tuyau (1).
