A system for separating biological fluids into components, comprises a set of containers (40, 42-44) for the biological fluid to be separated and the separated components, optionally an additional container (41) for additive solution, and a hollow centrifugal processing chamber (20) having an axial inlet/outlet (7) for the biological fluid. The processing chamber contains a piston (21) movable to intake a selected quantity of biological fluid and express processed biological fluid components via the outlet. Optical means (60-69) monitor the position of piston (21) to control the amount of intaken fluid and the expression of components. A distribution valve arrangement (45-48) selectively communicates the processing chamber (20) and the containers (40-44) or places them out of communication. The system is arranged to operate in a separation mode and in a non-separation transfer mode, especially for adding preservative solution to separated blood stem cells. In the separation mode, fluids are intaken into processing chamber (20), centrifuged and separated into components, and the components expressed possibly through the use of a density gradient product. In the transfer mode, the processing chamber (20) intakes and expresses fluid with the chamber stationary, the valve actuation arrangement (45-48) transferring fluid from one container (40-44) to another via the processing chamber (20), by movement of the piston (21), without centrifugation or separation, and the means (60-69) for monitoring the piston's position controls the amounts of non-separated fluids transferred.

L'invention concerne un système permettant de séparer les fluides biologiques en plusieurs composants. Ce système comprend une série de récipients (40, 42-44) destinés au fluide à séparer et aux composants séparés, et éventuellement un récipient (41) complémentaire pour une solution additive, et une chambre (20) de traitement centrifuge creuse présentant une entrée/sortie (7) axiale pour le fluide biologique. La chambre de traitement contient un piston (21) qui peut être déplacé de manière à aspirer une quantité choisie de fluide biologique et à émettre les composants du fluide biologique par la sortie. Des moyens (60-69) optiques permettent de contrôler la position du piston (21) afin de régler la quantité de fluide aspiré et l'émission des composants. Un système (45-48) de soupapes de distribution fait communiquer de manière sélective la chambre (20) de traitement avec les récipients (40-44) ou interrompt la communication entre ces dernières. Ce système est prévu pour fonctionner selon un mode de séparation et selon un mode de transfert sans séparation, ce dernier permettant en particulier d'ajouter une solution de conservation à des cellules souches sanguines séparées. En mode de séparation, les fluides sont aspirés dans la chambre (20) de traitement, centrifugés et séparés en différents composants, puis ces composants sont extraits, éventuellement à travers un produit à gradient de densité. En mode de transfert, le fluide entre dans la chambre (20) de traitement et en ressort tandis que cette dernière reste en position fixe, et le système (45-48) de commande des soupapes permet de transférer le fluide d'un récipient (40-44) à l'autre via la chambre (20) de traitement par le mouvement du piston (21), sans centrifugation ou séparation, et les moyens (60-69) permettant de surveiller la position du piston assurent le dosage des quantités de fluide non séparé transférées.
