What is claimed is:

1. A valve for controlling the flow of fluent plastic material to a mold cavity (4), wherein the valve comprises a valve housing (12) having a material inlet (32) and a material outlet (17); an elongated valve pin (38) axially slidably carried within the valve housing (12), the pin (38) having an end (40) adjacent the material outlet (17) and adapted to be engaged selectively with the outlet (17) to prevent flow of material through the valve and to be disengaged selectively from the material outlet (17) to permit flow of material through the valve; and a valve pin guide (36) carried by the vaive housing (12) and having an opening for slidably receiving the elongated valve pin (38) for reciprocating axial movement;
characterized in that the valve further comprises a valve pin actuator including a rotatable eccentric cam (60) that cooperates with the valve pin (38) at a position spaced from the end (40) adjacent the outlet (17), for moving the valve pin (38) in a direction parallel to the axis of the valve pin (38) toward and away from the material outlet (17).

A valve in accordance with claim 1 , characterized in that the valve further includes a valve drive member (42) carried by the valve pin (38) and spaced axially along the valve pin (38) from the end adjacent the outlet (17), the valve drive member (42) supported for linear movement in a direction parallel to the axis of the valve pin (38) and restrained by the valve pin (38) guide from movement in a direction transverse to the axis of the valve pin (38).

3. A valve in accordance with claim 2, characterized in that the valve drive member (42) includes a passageway (51) extending transversely to the axis of the valve pin (38).

A valve in accordance with claim 3, characterized in that the valve further includes a cam follower block (56) slidably carried in the passageway (51) of the valve drive member (42) for movement transverse to the axis of the valve pin (38), the cam follower block (56) including an interior cam follower surface (58) for receiving and engaging an outer surface of the eccentric cam (60).

5. A valve in accordance with claim 1 , characterized in that the rotatable eccentric cam (60) is carried on a camshaft (18) rotatably supported in the housing (12) and having its axis extending transversely to the axis of the valve pin (38).

6. A valve in accordance with claim 2, characterized in that the housing (12) includes guide surfaces (44,46,48,50) that extend parallel with the axis of the valve pin (38) for guiding the valve drive member (42) as it moves toward and away from the material outlet (17).

7. A valve in accordance with claim 4, characterized in that the cam (60) is engaged with the cam follower block (56) for moving the valve drive member (42) in a first direction and in a second direction that is opposite from the first direction.

A valve for controlling the flow of fluent plastic material from an injection molding machine to a mold cavity (4), wherein the valve comprises a valve housing (12) having a material inlet (32) and a material outlet (17); an elongated valve pin (38) slidably carried within the valve housing (12), the pin (38) having an end adjacent the material outlet (17) and adapted to be engaged selectively with the material outlet (17) to prevent flow of material through the valve, and to be disengaged selectively from the material outlet (17) to permit flow of material through the valve; and a valve pin guide (36) carried by the housing (12) and having an opening for slidably receiving the elongated valve pin (38) for reciprocating axial movement; characterized in that the valve further comprises:
a valve drive member (42) carried by the valve pin (38) and spaced axially along the valve pin (38) from the end adjacent the outlet (17), the valve drive
member (42) supported for linear movement in a direction parallel to the axis of the valve pin (38) and restrained by the valve pin guide (36) from movement in a
direction transverse to the axis of the valve pin (38), the valve drive member (42) including a passageway (51 ) extending transversely to the axis of the valve pin (38);
a camshaft (18) rotatably supported in the guide housing (12) and having its axis extending transversely to the axis of the valve pin (38), the camshaft (18)
including an eccentric cam member (60);
a cam follower block (56) slidably carried in the passageway (51) of the valve drive member (42) for movement transverse to the axis of the valve pin (38), the cam follower block (56) including an interior cam follower surface (58) for receiving and engaging an outer surface of the eccentric cam member (60); and
means (20) for rotating the camshaft (18) about its axis to impart movement to the valve pin (38) in the direction parallel to the axis of the valve pin (38) to open and close the valve outlet (17) selectively.
