Abstract

A hypervelocity impact shield assembly (10) for spacecraft. The assembly includes at least one sacrificial layer of hypervelocity impactor disrupting material. A spacing element (18) including space-rated open cell foam material, is positioned between said layer and a spacecraft surface (12). A cover element (20) is arranged to maintain the integrity of the shield assembly. In the event of an impact, the sacrificial layer (36) is perforated while disrupting the impactor, thus dispersing it in the form of an expanding debris cloud, spreading the impact energy over a volume formed by the spacing element between the sacrificial layer and the spacecraft surface. The open-cell foam provides an extremely lightweight and low-cost means of supporting the sacrificial layer. In a preferred embodiment, the invention is in the form of a multi-shock assembly (26) including a plurality of such sacrificial layers and spacing elements (38) between them. Thus, a plurality of multi-shock subassemblies are provided which include alternating layers of sacrificial layers and spacing elements.

Cette invention concerne un blindage anti-impact à grande vitesse (10) destiné à protéger la surface d'un vaisseau spatial contre des chocs d'objets survenant à très grande vitesse. L'ensemble blindage comprend au moins une couche sacrificielle d'impact et de fragmentation (16) faite d'un matériau d'impact/fragmentation pour collision à grande vitesse avec un objet. Un élément intercalaire primaire (18) renfermant un matériau en mousse spatialisée à cellules ouvertes est disposé entre au moins une couche sacrificielle (16) et une surface (12) du vaisseau spatial. Un élément de couverture (20) spécial, disposé sur la couche sacrificielle (16) et l'élément primaire intercalaire (18), garantit l'intégrité de l'ensemble blindage anti-impact à très grande vitesse (10). Selon un mode de réalisation préféré, l'ensemble blindage se présente sous la forme d'un ensemble multichocs (26) composé d'une pluralité de couches sacrificielles d'impact/fragmentation (36). Dans ce cas, l'ensemble blindage anti-impact à très grande vitesse comprend une pluralité d'éléments intercalaires secondaires (38). Chacun de ces éléments est disposé contre une couche sacrificielle (36) avec laquelle il forme un sous-ensemble multichocs (28, 30, 32, 34). Ainsi, on dispose d'une pluralité de sous-ensembles (28, 30, 32, 34) faits en alternance de couches sacrificielles (36) et d'éléments intercalaires secondaires (38).
