What Is Claimed Is:

1. A measuring gauge for measuring the relative position of two bones during surgery, said .measuring gauge comprising an anchor, an adapter, an outrigger and a locking joint:
said anchor being adapted for attachment to a first bone of the patient;
said adapter being adapted for removable
attachment to said anchor;
said outrigger comprising a pointer;
said locking joint being adapted for adjustable attachment to said adapter; and
said outrigger being adapted for adjustable attachment to said locking joint;
whereby when said anchor is attached to the first bone of the patient, said locking joint may be
selectively adjusted relative to said adaptor, and said outrigger may be selectively adjusted relative to said locking joint, until said pointer is aligned with a reference point located on a second bone of the
patient', and then said locking joint may be adjusted so as to secure said locking joint to said adapter and so as to secure said outrigger to said locking joint, whereupon said adapter, locking joint and outrigger may be removed as a unit from said anchor.

2. A measuring gauge according to claim 1
wherein:
said adapter comprises a first axis;
said outrigger comprises a second axis;
said locking joint is adapted for adjustable attachment to said adapter such that said locking joint may be selectively pivoted about and moved along said first axis; and
said outrigger is adapted for adjustable
attachment to said locking joint such that said
outrigger may be selectively pivoted about and moved along said second axis;
whereby when said anchor is attached to the first bone of the patient, said locking joint may be
selectively pivoted about and moved along said first

axis, and said outrigger may be pivoted about and moved along its second axis, until said pointer is aligned with a reference point located on a second bone of the patient, and then said locking joint may be adjusted so as to secure said locking joint to said adapter and so as to secure said outrigger to said locking joint, whereupon said adapter, locking joint and outrigger may be removed as a unit from said anchor.

3. A measuring gauge according to claim 2 wherein said first axis and said second axis extend at a substantially right angle to one another.

4. A measuring gauge according to claim 1 wherein said anchor comprises a pin having a point at one end.

5. A measuring gauge according to claim 1 wherein said anchor comprises a first shoulder spaced from said point.

6. A measuring gauge according to claim 5 wherein said first shoulder is arranged to limit penetration of said pin into the first bone.

7. A measuring gauge according to claim 4 wherein said adapter comprises a sleeve adapted to be mounted over said pin.

8. A measuring gauge according to claim 7 wherein said pin comprises a second shoulder spaced from said first shoulder, and further wherein said sleeve is adapted to contact said second shoulder when said adapter is mounted on said anchor.

9. A measuring gauge according to claim 1 wherein said adapter comprises a handle at one end.

10. A measuring a gauge according to claim 1 wherein said outrigger comprises a bar portion, and further wherein said pointer is adjustably mounted to said bar portion.

11. A method for measuring the relative position of two bones during surgery, said method comprising the steps of: (1) providing a measuring gauge comprising an anchor, an adapter, an outrigger having a pointer, and a locking joint;
(2) attaching said anchor to the first bone, and making a mark on the second bone;
(3) mounting said adapter, outrigger and locking joint on said anchor, and adjusting the
positions of said outrigger and locking joint relative to said adapter such that said pointer is aligned with said mark;
(4) locking said adapter, outrigger and locking joint in position relative to one another; and

(5) removing said adapter, outrigger and locking joint as a unit from said anchor.

12. A method according to claim 11 wherein said method comprises the additional step of:
(6) remounting said adapter, outrigger and locking joint as a unit to said anchor, and comparing the location of said pointer to said mark.
