There is disclosed a decoder buffer capable of receiving streaming video data packets and storing the data packets in a plurality of access units. Each of the access units holds at least one data packet associated with a selected frame in the streaming video. The decoder buffer comprises: 1) a first buffer region comprising at least one access unit for storing data packets that are less immediately needed by the video decoder; and 2) a re-transmission region comprising at least one access unit for storing data packets that are most immediately needed by the video decoder. The decoder buffer, in response to a detection of a missing data packet in the re-transmission region, requests that the streaming video transmitter retransmit the missing packet.

L'invention concerne un tampon de décodeur pouvant recevoir des paquets de données vidéo et les mémoriser dans plusieurs unités d'accès. Chacune de ces unités contient au moins un paquet de données associé à une trame sélectionnée dans le train de données vidéo. Le tampon de décodeur comprend (1) une première zone tampon comprenant au moins une unité d'accès pour mémoriser des paquets de données qui sont moins immédiatement requis par le décodeur vidéo; et (2) une zone de retransmission comprenant au moins une unité d'accès pour mémoriser des paquets de données qui sont plus immédiatement requis par le décodeur vidéo. Le tampon de décodeur, en réponse à la détection d'un paquet de données manquant dans la zone de retransmission demande que l'émetteur de données vidéo retransmette le paquet manquant.
