A currency note condition recognition apparatus and method uses a programmed microelectronic CPU (14) to execute program instructions store in PROM (18) to read in pixel data from an optical imaging section including LEDs and photodiodes (15, 16) for generating signals which can be converted to a first image of a currency note being transported along the path of travel. The CPU (14) receives position and skew data detected by external sensors (33, 34) for sensing the position and skew of the note. The CPU executes the program instructions, first to assemble a first data image of pixel data representing a two-dimensional image of substantially all of the note while averaging the pixel data in groups for further processing; second, to correct the first data image based on the skew data to eliminate skew; third, to relate the first data image to a plurality of predefined data images according to a mathematical function to determine whether the first data image can be classified as matching any one of the predefined data images corresponding to a specific currency denomination; and fourth to test the note for missing material and transmissivity in order to determine note fitness.

L'invention concerne un appareil de reconnaissance d'état de billets de banques. L'invention traite également d'un procédé utilisant une unité de traitement centrale (14) pour exécuter des instructions de programmes mémorisées dans une mémoire PROM (18) afin de lire des données d'éléments d'images à partir d'une section d'imagerie optique comprenant des diodes électroluminescentes et des photodiodes (15, 16) pour générer des signaux qui peuvent être transformés en une première image d'un billet de banque transporté le long de la trajectoire de déplacement. L'unité de traitement centrale (14) reçoit la position et des données de défaut d'équerrage détectés par des capteurs externes (33, 34) détectant la position et l'équerrage du billet. L'unité de traitement centrale exécute les instructions du programme. Ces instructions visent d'abord à assembler une première image formées de données d'éléments d'images représentant une image bidimensionnelle de pratiquement la totalité du billet, tout en faisant la moyenne des données d'éléments d'images en groupes en vue de traitements ultérieurs. Ensuite, ces instructions ont pour objectif de pour corriger la première image obtenue en fonction des données d'équerrage pour éliminer le défaut d'équerrage, puis pour corréler la première image à plusieurs imagesrédéfinies selon une fonction mathématique pour déterminer si la première imageeut être classée comme correspondant à l'une quelconque des images prédéfinies correspondant à une dénomination de monnaie spécifique. Enfin, ces instructions visent à tester le billet en vue de détecter un matériau manquant et sa transmissivité et de déterminer l'état du billet.
