(EN)An austenitic stainless steel alloy is disclosed that has the following broad weight percent composition: C 0.025-0.15; Mn 4-12; Si 1.0 max.; P 0.2 max.; S 0.1 max.; Cr 15.5-17.5; Ni 1-4; Mo 0.25-1.5; Cu 1.5-4; W 1.0 max.; Co 1.0 max.; N 0.05-0.30. The balance of the alloy is iron and the usual impurities. Within the foregoing ranges, the elements are balanced such that the combined amount of carbon and nitrogen is at least about 0.19 %, the combined amount of chromium and molybdenum is less than about 17.75 % and %Cr + 3.3(%Mo) + 13(%N) > 20.5. The alloy provides a unique combination of corrosion resistance, formability, and resistance to work hardening.
