Abstract:
(EN) A tubing, and a device and method for manufacturing same, involves combining a plurality of strengthening fibers with a polymer matrix. For the method of the present invention, a thermoplastic polymer component is blended with a plurality of liquid crystal polymer particles. This mix is heated to a temperature below approximately 270 °C and extruded to establish the thermoplastic polymer component as a matrix, and to force the particles into elongated fibers embedded in the matrix. Specifically, each fiber is forced into having an aspect ratio greater than about fifty to one. Both the die and mandrel are heated during the extrusion process, to ensure uniform distribution of fibers within the polymer matrix. For the device of the present invention, a passageway is formed between a die and a mandrel through which the polymer mix is extruded. Depending on the particular tubing characteristics desired, the mandrel may or may not be selectively rotated relative to the die during extrusion, resulting in fibers oriented in a helical or a longitudinal configuration, respectively.
(FR) L'invention porte sur un tube, un dispositif et leurs procédés de fabrication consistant à combiner des fibres de renfort à une matrice de polymère. On utilise à cet effet un polymère thermoplastique mélangé à des particules d'un polymère en cristaux liquides. Le mélange est chauffé à un température inférieur à environ 270 °C puis extrudé pour constituer une matrice et étirer les particules pour en faire des fibres longues d'un allongement minimal d'au moins 50:1 noyées dans la matrice. La filière et le mandrin sont chauffés pendant l'extrusion pour assurer une distribution uniforme des fibres à l'intérieur de la matrice. Le dispositif de l'invention comporte un passage entre la filière et le mandrin par où est extrudé le mélange de polymères. Selon les caractéristiques particulières du tube désirées, le mandrin peut ou non tourner par rapport à la filière pendant l'extrusion, ce qui donne selon le cas une configuration à fibres hélicoïdales ou longitudinales.
